The Columbiana Auxiliary Police was first formed as a Civil Defense Corp., to
assist the Police in time of war.  Its function was to provide Authorities with
trained personnel that could direct the public to shelters and control traffic.

After the threat of war had dissipated the men went on to form what we know
today as the Columbiana Auxiliary Police Force. The Auxiliary Force provide a
valuable service to the regular Police Department by providing trained personnel
to help with traffic control and crowds at civic events and during natural disasters
or storm related emergencies.

The Auxiliary Force also conducts safety classes several times each year. One of
the classes offered is for child bicycle riders, complete with a bicycle rodeo/obstacle
course. All participants are given free helmets. Throughout the summer months
children found wearing the helmets are rewarded with gift certificates to local ice cream
stores and restaurants. Another event is the Annual Safety Day held near Burger King.
All city safety forces are on display during the day, and each safety force conducts drills
and demonstrations throughout the day. The Neally Smoke house has been on site each
year and is a great tool to educate children in what to do if their house were to catch
fire, and allows them to practice different escape routes depending on the temperature of
doors and smoke.

In addition to regular duties, one of the primary functions of today's Auxiliary Officer is
to relieve regular officers from tasks that do not require their presence, but still need a
trained officer to be present to assure the public's safety. The Auxiliary is dispatched
frequently during storms that down large trees and power lines, or to motor vehicle
accidents and house fires that necessitate roads be closed or detours be established.
These officers may direct traffic or control an intersection when power has gone out
and the traffic lights are not functioning. They also assist the city by volunteering hours
of their own time policing public gatherings such as fairs, parades, and sporting events.

Each Auxiliary Officer is a sworn commissioned officer, However they are an unarmed
force, and may only exercise specific police powers as directed by city authorities.
Anyone interested in joining the ranks of the Columbiana Auxiliary Police may pick up
an application at the Police Station. Members do not need to live in the city, but there is
a mileage requirement. Interviews are held two or three times each year, or as openings
occur.
