COLUMBIANA BICYCLE PATROL

The Columbiana Police Bicycle Patrol Unit is made up of highly motivated officers. Their dedication and attention to duty builds a firm basis for exceptional community relations.

Purpose: The purpose of the Bike Patrol is to augment the regular patrol units of the department. Further the bike patrol allows our officers to interact more with our citizens and allows for a closer relationship with the community at large. The Bike Patrol is able to access areas where traditional patrols cannot, and has been able to, if not completely, eliminate trouble spots throughout the city.

History: The Bike Patrol was established in April of 1998 under Chief John Krawchyk and was headed by Sgt. Jim Ewing and Officer Chris Dailey. Officer Wade Boley joined the patrol later that summer. The following year the trio received training in Urban Police Mountain Bicycle Techniques in Cleveland, Ohio. Officer Ryan Pike joined the Bike Patrol in 2001, bringing the total number of officers in the unit to four.

Operation: The Bike Patrol officers work in pairs and bike in addition to their regular work schedule. Officers patrol all of the special events held in town throughout the year.  The Bike Patrol has proven very effective at night patrol, monitoring teen trouble spots, checking businesses, patrolling Firestone Park and other outdoor recreational areas in addition to pro active policing during the daylight hours.  The patrol utilizes a battery operated radar gun to enforce speed limits in troubled areas.
