RAILROAD

The City of Columbiana has two railroads passing through. Both Railroads make stops for switching in the city.
The First is Norfolk And Southern
Railroad. This is the set of two tracks that travels through the City East and

will often pass each other in the City.
The Norfolk and Southern tracks
cross the following streets (East to West).

South

SAFETY TIPS
You cannot accurately judge a trains speed
or distance. Do not take chances. An optical illusion
makes a train seem farther
away and moving more slowly than it is. At night Judging speed and distance
is particularly difficult. Be very cautious.
Be prepare to stop when
following buses or trucks with hazardous materials placards. Federal regulations
and most state laws require them to stop at every railroad crossing.
Trains
Can't Stop Quickly... You Can After fully applying the brakes, a loaded freight
train traveling
55 mph takes a mile or more to stop. A 8-car passenger train
traveling 80 mph requires about a mile
to stop.
Where crossings are
protected by gates and warning lights, do not begin to cross until the gates have
returned to the full upright position and the flashing lights have shut
off. Should another train enter the area
before the flashing lights turn
off, the gates will immediately reverse direction and lower without warning or
delay. This could damage or trap your vehicle.
Never drive onto a railroad
crossing until you are sure you can clear the tracks on the other side without
stopping. Do not get trapped on a highway-rail crossing.
Trains do not travel on a predictable schedule, Always expect a train at every crossing.
When
you are at a multiple-track crossing and the last car of the closet train passes
by, stay alert. Before
crossing, look and listen carefully for another
train on another track coming from either direction.
If your vehicle
stalls at the highway-rail intersection, get everyone out and far away from the
tracks
immediately. Then call 911 to report the emergency. Do Not Return
To Your Vehicle.
Racing a train to a highway-rail intersection is a fool's games. If you lose, you may never have a second chance.

THE LAW
Railroad tracks, trestles, yards, and equipment is
private property. Walking or playing on them is Illegal - Trespassers
Are
Subject to Arrest and Fines. TOO OFTEN THE PENALTY IS DEATH.
Since 1990, more than 5,000 people have been killed while trespassing on railroad rights-of-way and property.
Cross tracks only at designated pedestrian or roadway crossings. Observe and obey all warning signs and signals.
Do not go onto
railroad trestles. There is only enough clearance on the tracks for a train to
pass. Remember trains are
wider than the tracks.
Do not attempt
to hop aboard moving or stationary railroad equipment. A slip of the foot can
cost you a limb,
or your live. Stationary equipment can move in either
direction without warning! Climbing on equipment
will subject you to
arrest and fines.
Do not walk, run, cycle, or operate all terrain vehicles (ATVs) on railroad tracks or right-of-ways.
Remember: Rails and recreation do not mix!
