FAQ

Do I have to have insurance or other financial responsibility coverage on my vehicle?

In Ohio, it is illegal to drive any motor vehicle without insurance or other financial responsibility (FR) coverage or to allow anyone else to drive the owner’s vehicle without FR coverage.

PROOF OF COVERAGE IS REQUIRED: *Whenever a police officer issues a traffic ticket *At all vehicle inspection stops *Upon traffic court appearances and *Upon random checks by the Registrar of Motor Vehicles.

ANY DRIVER OR OWNER WHO FAILS TO SHOW PROOF OF INSURANCE OR OTHER COVERAGE WILL *Lose his or her driver license for 90 days for a first offense, ONE YEAR for a second offense, and TWO YEARS for additional offenses *Lose his or her license plates and vehicle registration *Pay reinstatement fees of $100.00 first offense, $300.00 second offense, and $600.00 for any additional offense AND *Be required to maintain special FR coverage (“High-risk” insurance or equivalent) on file with the Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) for up to FIVE YEARS.

ONCE THIS SUSPENSION IS IN EFFECT: Any driver or owner who violates the suspension will have his or her vehicle immobilized and his or her license plates confiscated for at least 30 DAYS first offense and 60 DAYS second offense. For third or subsequent offenses, the vehicle will be forfeited and sold and the person will not be permitted to register any motor vehicle in Ohio for FIVE YEARS.

IF YOU ARE INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT WITHOUT INSURANCE OR OTHER FR COVERAGE, in addition to all the penalties listed above, you may have *A SECURITY SUSPENSION for TWO YEARS or more and *A JUDGMENT SUSPENSION until damages are completely paid.
* THESE PENALTIES ARE IN ADDITION TO ANY FINES OR PENALTIES IMPOSED BY A COURT OF LAW.
* WARNING: THESE LAWS DO NOT PREVENT THE POSSIBILITY THAT YOU MAY BE INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT WITH A PERSON WHO HAS NO INSURANCE OR OTHER FR COVERAGE.

I received a letter in the mail that contained a check with instructions to cash it, what do I do?

Do NOT cash the check! This is a scam that is widely circulated. If you are unsure what to do, please contact dispatch and request to speak with an officer or stop by the station and speak with one there.

I received a letter in the mail that claims to be from a loved one and asked me to wire them money, is this legitimate?

In most cases this is a scam. People from foreign countries work hard to obtain a list of family members and tend to prey on the elderly. Do not wire money per the letters instructions! We do suggest that you check with family to make sure that your loved one is ok. If you are unsure what to do, please contact dispatch and request to speak with an officer or stop by the station and speak with one there.

Someone just came to my door offering to seal my driveway at an unbelievable price, is this legitimate?

Someone usually approaches you driving an older, usually non-descript work truck like a small dump or pick up truck. They explain how they were in the area doing numerous paving jobs and “just happen” to have excess paving material they have to get rid of. Then they offer you the super blow-out price you just can’t turn down.. Please, turn it down, most of the time these con artists will simply coat your driveway with spent dirty oil, they’ll tell you to avoid parking for several days. The con men that try this scam usually have no markings on their truck(s) and will write bills on questionable stationary. Rarely are they ever from a local, verifiable address. If you are unsure if a solicitor is legitimate, contact dispatch at 330-482-9292 and verify that the person has obtained a solicitors permit from the Chief of Police.
